FAQs

  • We host multi-day events in travel destinations with small class sizes to guarantee you the most authentic and valuable experience possible with lots of one-on-one our expert coaches, in the gym and at our social events, which are on the house. These experiences are curated by Rose Athena with an eye for maximizing your training progress, relaxation, and pure enjoyment of the social connections fostered through a dedicated jiu-jitsu practise.

  • The costs that are considered when we set pricing include our coaches rates, airfare, and accommodations, the cost for transport services which vary by event, the costs for dinners and parties (these also vary by event), and our yearly marketing costs.

  • In Vancouver, we have partnered with The Delta by Marriott, which is walking distance from Kuzushi. In Playa, we have partnered with HM Hotel. These hotels offer us a special discount. Guests are welcome to choose their own accommodations, but please note that in Playa the bus to the gym will pick guests up and drop them off at the dedicated hotel, so we recommend that you book your accommodations at that hotel or nearby.

  • Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa is a World and Pan American Champion, European Open and Asian IBJJF Champion and a two-time ADCC Worlds medalist. Born in Boa Vista, Brazil, Lucas earned his black belt under professor Fabiano Rodrigues. Lucas Barbosa is one of the most accomplished jiu jitsu athletes of his generation.

    Braulio Estima is a multiple time World Champion and an ADCC absolute & super fight champion. Estima has collected trophies throughout his grappling career, at every belt level, both as a fighter and as an instructor.

    Magid Hage is the head instructor at the Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Academy in Escondido, California. He is well-known for his supremely effective used of the baseball bat choke. Magid has 18 wins on his professional record, with multiple victories by submission at ADCC and IBJJF throughout the years.

    Jason Lara of Mat Sense is the head wrestling coach at Atos NW. He has trained three Freestyle World wrestling teams and helped his students achieve two World wrestling medals. Lara has been coach to multiple Division 1 All-Americans. Now based in Oregon where he coaches alongside Lucas Barbosa, Jason travels the world with Mat Sense wrestling teaching international seminars.

    Ben Dyson is an ADCC European Trials Champion and was ranked 13th in the world in the 88kg weight class by Flograppling. He has competed at ADCC Worlds against Craig Jones, at Polaris against Nicky Rod, and at IBJJF against Roberto Jiminez, among many other notable bouts. He has won many IBJJF titles and is sponsored by Scramble. He is BJJ Black Belt under Roy Dean.

    Jake Jo is the head coach at Atlanta’s Superfly Jiu Jitsu and a coach at American Top Team Atlanta. He received his black belt from UFC veteran Roan “Jucao” Carneiro. Originally hailing from New York, Jake began is BJJ career training under Jim Abrille in 2005. Jake’s specialty is no-gi grappling and leg lock attacks.

  • Kuzushi Grappling is a 1,500 sq ft facility located in the heart of downtown, Vancouver, within a 10 minute drive to the waterfront. The head coach at Kuzushi Grappling is Ben Dyson, a British BJJ black belt under Roy Dean.

    Gracie Barra is a 2,300 sq ft second-floor facility with showers and a beautiful sunset view located in the Ejidal district of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, within a 10 minute drive to the beach. The Gracie Barra Playa gym is host to a coaching staff representing decades of competitive jiu jitsu history and professional expertise. The head coach at Gracie Barra is Thomas Fisher, an American hailing from Philadelphia who is fluent in both English and Spanish. Thomas and our driver Malaco will serve as your local guides. If you have any questions about the local customs, best restaurants, exchange rates, etc. Thomas and Malaco are friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible.

  • You are responsible for your flights and your transportation from the airport to the hotel. Standard taxi fares are listed here. For the higher priced events, we provide transportation for excursions, and the welcome and farewell dinners. We recommend budgeting $50 to $100/day for food and other daily items - though in many cases you will find it will be possible for you to be quite comfortable spending even less!

  • While the level of instruction will be high given the pedigree of our coaches, newcomers to jiu jitsu are welcome! The curriculum is designed to push you to your physical and mental limits, and our coaches are true professionals who can gauge where that limit is for you personally.

  • Our camps are all-ages! Families are very welcome. We can provide group discounts. Email rose@basedfightcamp.com with the details of your party and she will make sure you can get your whole group together and save. If you’re bringing a friend or a spouse who doesn’t want to train, but you’d like to have them join the group for dinners, parties, and excursions, we can accommodate that too! Add a plus one to your ticket for $295!

  • Registration is refundable up to 60 days prior to event start, however some administration fees amounting to 10% of the original charge will be withheld. In the case of a top-down government enforced travel restriction, Based Fight Camp will either apply the payment to a future event, or issue a return, regardless of time frame to event start, withholding only the 10% administration fee. The choice between these two options will be at your discretion.
